Chapter 9

Kurt Werther had gone back to the destroyed factory and moved into his previous hiding place. He waited there for an hour. Nothing disturbed him. Sonja had left this mysterious place long ago. Taking as much care as if he were leading a reconnaissance patrol through no man’s land, Werther moved through the rubble. He reached a collapsed hallway and after some effort found a staircase which led down below. He turned on his torch and carefully climbed down the steps into the darkness. He entered an undamaged passageway. Rats jumped through the beam of the torch. An iron door finally blocked his way. Millimetre by millimetre he lowered the handle. The door was locked. It seemed to him as though he could hear a dry cough. It could be a deception. But now the rough, hard sound repeated itself. There was no doubt, a little way ahead, behind the door a person was coughing – surely the secret inhabitant of the cellar that Voluntas and Sonja Petrowna had looked for. Should he shoot the castle to bits to forcefully enter this subterranean hiding place?

He decided against this. Who could say whether someone else was in there? Back! He must go back and write a report for Fabricius. Perhaps when Fabricius turned defensive they would get on the trail of a dangerous network of agents. And Sonja Petrowna? The girl, for whom he had provided an escape, who had been welcomed into his house – an enemy agent? It was unthinkable! But why else would she be seen here?

Quietly, he turned round, climbed the stairs and, in the darkness, looked for the exit from the yard.

When he came to the house where Fabricius lived with his daughter, a war widow, he pressed on the bell on the nameplate. The door opener clattered. Werther climbed down the stairs. The white-haired Fabricius stood behind the half-opened door, pistol in his right hand. When he saw Werther, with a laugh, he slipped the weapon into his pocket. ‘Now?’ he asked having shut the door.

They entered the room in which the meetings of the circle of five took place. Werther lit up a cigarette. In the form of a duty report, he recounted his observations. Voluntas no doubt kept in contact with another group of the underground movement but probably this involved more spying and sabotage.

Werther said nothing about Sonja Petrowna. He wanted to make her look guilty before he had the evidence. When he was, once again, on the street, he considered whether his Russian friend Boris Nikititisch Mironow should be made aware of the situation. Together they would try, with complete discretion, to get to grips with what was going on. Mironow would do everything to delay Sonja. When he spoke to her, possibly she would tell the truth. Perhaps she had been compelled to take part in an evil game.

Werther considered whether he should phone Mironow in Dahlem. But that would cause a stir and put Sonja in danger. Early tomorrow he would, in any case, be back on duty at Victoriaplatz.
